Project Backgroud

The Dongjiang River is 562 km long (Jiangxi, Guangdong), originated from Xunwu County in Jiangxi Province. It flows through Heyuan, Huizhou, Dongguan and Shenzhen in Guangdong Province, and also supplies drinking water to Hong Kong. 75% of the water in Hong Kong is sources from the Dongjiang River source.

The area along Dongjiang has been heavily deforested and exploited in the past decades; some of the woodlands are lost due to fire and bacterial infection. Deforestation in turn posted an adverse effect on the ecosystem. In order to improve the environment and water quality of the Dongjiang river source region. FoE (HK) launched the "Plant a Tree” project in 2009. Tree planting will improve the local environment and the water quality in rural communities. It will also revitalize the abandoned land and improve soil quality. Around 185,000 trees were planted over the years. Some of the areas have become forests, improving the environment of the Dongjiang river souce region.
