【Press Release】Anthony Cheung Appointed to Independent Standards Board of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol

Friends of the Earth (HK) is pleased to announce that Mr Anthony Cheung, Vice Chairperson and Green Finance Convenor of Friends of the Earth (HK), has been appointed as a member of the Independent Standards Board (ISB) of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP).

This prestigious appointment places Hong Kong at the forefront of global sustainability standard-setting. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol provides the world's most widely used greenhouse gas accounting standards, which form the foundation for emissions measurement and reporting worldwide.

"I am honoured to join the Independent Standards Board of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol," said Mr Cheung. "This presents a valuable opportunity to contribute Hong Kong's perspective to global sustainability standards while helping to ensure that our local practices align with international frameworks. I look forward to bringing insights from both Hong Kong and mainland China to this important global platform."

As a member of the ISB, Mr Cheung will join leading global experts in climate science, corporate sustainability, and environmental policy. The ISB serves as the GHGP's decision-making entity with responsibilities including:

  • Overseeing the standards development process
  • Reviewing and approving GHG Protocol Standards
  • Making decisions related to the content of standards

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol's classification framework for emissions—Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy), and Scope 3 (all other indirect emissions in a value chain)—has become the global standard for carbon accounting.

Mr Cheung's appointment comes at a time when Hong Kong is strengthening its position as a green finance hub in Asia. His role will help bridge local sustainability practices with global standards, supporting Hong Kong's transition to a low-carbon economy.
