The 10th Power Smart Awards Presentation Ceremony
|
|
The 10th Power Smart Awards Presentation Ceremony
was held in HKFYG Building on 9 January. Mr.
Frank Chan, Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, was invited as the officiating guest to the
ceremony. This year, Power Smart was supported by more than 2,600
corporates. During the contest period (July - September), an
overall reduction of 6% in electricity consumption was achieved.
The 40 million kWh of electricity saved is equivalent to 28,000
tonnes of carbon dioxide.
FoE(HK) will plant trees at the source of Dongjiang for the award
winners in recognition of their support for energy saving and
carbon reduction.

EMSD has listened to Our Voice
|
|
The EMSD has recently added the Energy Utilization
Index (EUI) for audited buildings to its webpage. The EUI is a key indicator of the building’s
electricity usage intensity per floor space area. The webpage
allows a much easier benchmark comparison among the buildings at
the finger tip, instead of the need to visit the buildings in
person.
FoE(HK) launched a similar EUI campaign in early 2015 to push the
government to improve energy usage data transparency. We are glad
that the EMSD has taken our advice into consideration.

Charter on External Lighting
|
|
Studies have shown that light pollution leads to
increased incidence of headaches, worker fatigue,
medically-defined stress, anxiety etc. To help minimize the light
nuisance and energy wastage problems caused by external lighting
installations, the Environment Bureau launched the Charter on
External Lighting on 11 January. Currently, nearly 1000
properties and shops have already committed to sign the Charter.
Signatories that comply with the requirement to switch off
external lighting from 11pm to 7am will be given the “Platinum
Award”, while those complying with the requirement to switch off
external lighting from midnight to 7am will be given the “Gold
Award”.
FoE(HK) encourages more corporates to sign the Charter and
fulfill corporate social responsibility.

Tour at Woodside Biodiversity Education Centre
|
|
On 29 December, Dr. Vivian Wong and Ms. Suzanne
Cheung, Chairperson and CEO of FoE(HK), were invited by the
Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), to
attend an afternoon tea gathering at the Woodside Biodiversity
Education Centre. The gathering brought together partners from
non-governmental organizations to exchange views on nature
conservation with the AFCD.
We were also given a guided tour through the Woodside
Biodiversity Education Centre. Woodside covers 3,386 square
meters. It was revitalized as the first biodiversity education
centre in Hong Kong in 2012 to foster public awareness, knowledge
and understanding of the inherent value of Hong Kong’s
biodiversity.
FoE(HK) highly recommends the Woodside Biodiversity Education
Centre to all of you. We look forward to arranging a tour for our
COOL Ambassador in the near future.
